The theme for my quilt challenge this month was "Out of Asia" Here is my interpretation....
My Out of Asia themed art quilt is a tribute to one of my favorite
books. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is a book used in the school
system I used to work in as a wonderful message for peace education. It
is the true story of Sadako, who was overcome with Leukemia from
radiation as a result of the Hiroshima. While sick she hoped to make
1,000 paper cranes, inspired by the Japanese legend that one who created
1,000 origami cranes would be cured by the gods. She was only able to
complete 644 before she died. Her family and friends completed her dream
and to this day her statue reminds people all over the world: "This is
our cry. This is our prayer. Peace on Earth."
I used "reed" type prints and complimentary colors. The crane is hand
embroidered, just as Sadako created her cranes with her hands.
